What's in Bayberry Extract?

Bayberry extract is a large evergreen shrub native to southern North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. While the plant’s waxy fruits and aromatic leaves have been used in candle making, bayberry root bark was traditionally employed for its healthful properties. Our bayberry bark extract is milled from Morella cerifera and can be used in extractions, infusions, and to make topical pastes.

Bayberry bark extract trees grow near swamps and marshes, in sandy soil, or pine barrens. They are widely cultivated in the Eastern U.S. and the British Isles. Before becoming aware of its beneficial properties, American colonists used bayberry in candle making due to the wonderful fragrance of the leaves. The leaves release an intense, pleasant fragrance when rubbed.

The health benefits of bayberry extract are primarily due to its astringent effects. These uses include the support of the digestive system and respiratory system as well as healthy inflammation management and menstrual health support.

Myricetin is a flavonol with powerful activity. It has been shown to have a therapeutic effect in different cancers both in vitro and in vivo. It exerts apoptotic effects in combination with TRAIL or by other mitochondrial-dependent pathways, as well as inducing G2/M cell cycle arrest. Several myricetin-derived, synthetic flavonoids with improved properties, specific mitochondrial targeting and optimised physicochemical properties and drug-like attributes have been developed.

They showed more potency and enhanced potential as antitumour agents than bayberry bark extract. Among them, Oncamex was the most potent compound. Oncamex was capable of specific mitochondrial delivery and redox modulation. It specifically targeted the mitochondrial compartment, with rapid delivery and stable accumulation. In vivo study in mice implanted with the MDA-MB-231 breast cancer xenograft showed that treatment with Oncamex over 14 days inhibited tumour growth, reducing tissue viability and Ki-67 proliferation, with no signs of untoward effects on the animals. Oncamex exerted its antitumour effect through induction of cytotoxicity and apoptosis, induced gene expression changes related to cell cycle and apoptosis regulation and inhibited tumour proliferation and viability.
