What is Hibiscus Flower Powder?
Hibiscus flower powder comes from the sepals of the hibiscus sabdariffa plant. Because of its deep burgundy color, people often assume it comes from the petals of the flower; however, the fine powder actually comes from the fleshy, trumpet-shaped fruits that grow once the flowers have bloomed.
Hibiscus flower powder also goes by the name jamica, sorrel, chai torsh, bissap, and many others. From Iran to Mexico to Tobago this crimson blossom has a serious fan following. Hibiscus flowers are a sort of miracle plant. The leaves are used to make healing compounds. The seeds have diuretic properties. The fibrous stems are used to make burlap. And the sepals – the fleshy par that holds the flower – are used for food coloring and for tisanes.
It’s the tisane part we’re interested in, of course. The flavor of hibiscus is very cranberry-like with an added floral quality to it. Often citrus juice or other fruit juices are added, sometimes black tea, and almost always a sweetener is stirred in to offset the tartness.
Dried hibiscus flower powder makes for a quick tea. Add hot water or green tea, give it a shake and a bit of sugar, pour it in a bottle and go. Instant aqua de jamaica. For a more confectionary application roll homemade chocolate truffles in hibiscus powder as opposed to cocoa powder for sweet-tart treats with a broody pink complexion. For the jam maker, a teaspoon of hibiscus powder added to stone fruit or berry jams adds complexity and a pleasant tart tang.

Hibiscus Flower Powder Benefits:
1. May Support Healthy Blood Pressure Maintenance
At least five randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have investigated the potential of hibiscus flower powder to support healthy blood pressure levels. And according to a 2015 meta-analysis and research review published in the Journal of Hypertension, current research suggests the tea appears to have a significant beneficial effect in this regard.
The researchers added that tea made from Hibiscus sabdariffa is high in “organic acids, polyphenols, anthocyanins, polysaccharides, and volatile constituents that are beneficial for the cardiovascular system.”
2. May Support Healthy Cholesterol Levels
Organic hibiscus flower powder may help support healthy cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but the scientific evidence is mixed. For example, a 2013 research review of six peer-reviewed studies concluded that “available evidence from RCTs does not support the efficacy of Hibiscus sabdariffa” to support healthy lipid levels and that more research was needed to draw a conclusion.
3. May Support Healthy Blood Sugar Levels
Preliminary evidence suggests that hibiscus flower extracts or teas may help support healthy blood sugar levels.Unfortunately, it’s too early to say for sure, but test tube and animal studies have shown that Hibiscus sabdariffa may work by supporting healthier metabolism of sugars and other carbs.
4. May Support Healthy Weight Management
According to a small, randomized controlled trial of people aged 18-65 published in 2014, hibiscus flower powder may help support healthy weight management. And similar to the other effects we’ve already discussed, the researchers who conducted the trial think this particular benefit may be due to the high polyphenol content of hibiscus extracts.
5. May Support Kidney Health
As you may have realized, some of the benefits of organic hibiscus flower powder overlap with those of green tea, including its ability to support a healthy immune system.
