What is Inulin?

Inulin is a group of carbohydrate-like substances found in a variety of foods, from garlic, onions, and leeks to bananas, artichokes, asparagus, and whole wheat. Chicory root is the richest source of inulin, so is the primary source for inulin in supplements and fortified foods. It has a creamy and sweet texture, so it is used in foods as a fat and/or sugar replacer and to improve texture.

Inulin was defined by Rose in the early 1800s as the carbohydrate substance that he isolated from the root of Inula helenum (Rose 1804). We now know that it is present in a wide range of plants, including common vegetables and fruits (Van Loo et al. 1995). Inulin soluble fiber is a polydisperse substance based on fructose polymers (De Leenheer et al. 1994).

Today, only inulin fiber from chicory roots is commercialized as a purified food ingredient. The chicory roots that are used are of the same species (Cichorium intybus) that has been used for many years to produce the coffee substitute. At the moment, no genetically modified organism-derived chicory roots are used.

Research shows inulin can have positive effects on overall cholesterol, LDL "bad" cholesterol, and triglyceride levels. "This benefit is because inulin decreases cholesterol absorption as it moves through your digestive tract," Devje explains. High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can increase the risks of heart disease and stroke.

4. Metabolic health

"Metabolic syndrome is characterized by a cluster of conditions including abdominal obesity, systemic inflammation, and abnormal blood sugar and cholesterol levels," Devje says. Each of those conditions can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. "Inulin has shown to help lower blood glucose and insulin levels after meals," she says, which may lower those risks.
